Senior Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Specialist, Biosafety/Research Safety

 

Responsibilities:

The Senior EHS Specialist, Biosafety/Research Safety is responsible for assisting in the management and implementation of Genentech's South San Francisco (SSF) Biosafety Program, as well as, supporting compliance-assurance activities related to other applicable EHS programs in Genentech's Research and Early Development (gRED) organization. He/she will provide daily oversight of biosafety related activities across the SSF campus, including lab inspections and investigating incidents related to biological exposures or releases. The candidate will play a role in the coordination and management of the Institutional Biosafety Committee and review and comment on biosafety applications for work with rDNA, human pathogens and Select Agents. He/she will also help develop internal laboratory standards, procedures and practices to comply with EHS regulations and industry best practices.

 

In addition, the candidate will develop and provide laboratory safety training and perform area risk assessments. He/she will serve as a primary point of contact for internal clients in gRED and will respond to EHS related questions and concerns, such as waste management practices, incident investigations, PPE requirements, chemical storage and inventory control and life safety issues.

Requirements:

This position requires an accredited 4-year college/university curriculum degree in Microbiology (preferred), Biology, Chemistry or a related scientific field with a strong background in biological sciences. The candidate must have 5-7 years of in-depth health and safety experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified in this job description (within a biotech/biopharmaceutical or biomedical/academic research environment). Strong communications, interpersonal, presentation and collaboration skills are essential, as well as analytical, problem solving and project management abilities. Experience in an FDA-regulated work environment (biotherapeutics, pharmaceuticals or medical devices) is desirable and prior experience as a biosafety officer/specialist is preferred.

Senior Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Program Manager

 

Responsibilities:

This position is will provide technical support and consultation for assigned industrial hygiene (IH) programs related to anticipation, recognition, evaluation and control of workplace hazards related to chemical/physical agent exposures at the South San Francisco site. He/she will play a key role with development and/or implementation of IH programs such as Lead Management, Asbestos Management, Respiratory Protection, Hearing Conservation, Indoor Air Quality and Workplace Health Risk Assessment. The candidate will also provide technical support and guidance on potent compound safety and recommend control strategies for products and isolated intermediates to eliminate or reduce exposure risks. He/she will prepare Material Safety Data Sheets for new molecules in research and development and commercial products. In addition, the Senior EHS Program Manager will collaborate with EHS subject matter experts to develop standardized methods and procedures for supporting technology transfer associated with drug development. He/she will provide regulatory support in new product development to help ensure compliance with chemical control regulations and also assist Regulatory Affairs, as needed, in the development of Environmental Assessment Reports and Requests for Categorical Exclusion in Investigational New Drug applications.

Requirements:

A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited 4-year college or university with a major in a Physical Science, Life Science, Engineering, Safety, Industrial Hygiene or other relevant field is required. The candidate must have eight or more years of environmental health and safety work experience, preferably in manufacturing and/or the biotechnology/pharmaceutical industry. He/she must also possess solid working knowledge of chemical registration requirements and applicable health and safety regulations. The incumbent should have previous experience with managing/authoring Material Safety Data Sheets; chemical safety/product stewardship; and helping establish exposure control, containment and monitoring strategies. Professional registration or certification is required in a directly relevant discipline with the most relevant being industrial hygiene (CIH). Strong communications, interpersonal and collaboration skills are essential, as well as analytical, problem solving and project management abilities.
